End Citizens United Must Now Play The Long Game For Campaign Finance Reform

Just two years ago there was considerable optimism among supporters of campaign finance reform. Opportunity was looming. All indications were that Hillary Clinton would be elected President of the United States. That meant a chance for at least one Supreme Court pick. Clinton would certainly select a Justice that would be willing to revisit the infamous 2010 ruling known as Citizens United.

Fast forward to today and the situation could not have turned out worse. Donald Trump has been able to place two quick ultra-conservatives on the High Court. That means a group known as End Citizens United must look elsewhere than the Supreme Court if it wants to enact large-scale campaign finance reform for the U.S. election process. End Citizens United is a political action committee formed in 2015 with the sole purpose of ridding our nation of one of the worst Supreme Court rulings in history.

But there is more than one way to skin a cat. End Citizens United is determined to work harder than ever to get big money, dark money and the corrupting influence of special interest campaign cash out of the American election process. If it can’t expect more favorable justices placed on the Supreme Court, it can start electing more candidates to political office who support deep and meaningful campaign finance reform.

End Citizens United backers knows they must win hundreds of races across the country from the local level to national level. That means backing progressive candidates who abhor the current system so favored by far-right Republicans. Just flipping the U.S. House from Republican control to Democrat control can go a long way toward a future where millionaires and billionaires can no longer buy public offices with unlimited amounts of cash.

End Citizens united realizes that is is now playing the long game — but that’s nothing new in America. Other movements, such as the fight for civil rights the battle for gay marriage were decades in the making — but achieved victory in the end.
